Dare Day Festival, A Fun-Filled Family Event

We invite you to join the 42nd Dare Day on Saturday, June 3, 2017.  Held on the Manteo waterfront on the Outer Banks of North Carolina where arts, crafts entertainment, and family fun bring the community and visitors together.  The Town of Manteo in partnership with Dare County is presenting the 2017 Dare Day.  There will be new additions to the activities to the festival this year so watch this website for updates and information.  

Dare Day is a fun filled family event and is a festival you won’t want to miss.!!


Fourth of July Celebration

Independence Day in Manteo is a full day of fun, with children’s games and activities, contests, and a flea market.

Events begin at 3:00 PM and culminate in fireworks over the Roanoke Sound.

New World Festival of the Arts

The New World Festival of the Arts is an annual outdoor juried art show that happens each August along the beautiful Manteo Waterfront. Under the sponsorship of Dare County Arts Council and the Town of Manteo, the Festival provides both local and nationally recognized artists an opportunity to display and sell their creative work, with a focus on fine art and fine craft. Established in 1981, New World Festival of the Arts is one of the longest running outdoor art shows in the area, and it provides awareness of the current trends in visual arts while acquainting visitors and locals alike with the town of Manteo. OBX Marathon

The OBX Marathonhas been held annually since 2006 and has served as the North Carolina USATF Marathon Championship.

This race begins in Kitty Hawk and finishes in downtown Manteo. A half marathon and fun run are also featured.

Information for the Annual Holiday Boat Parade will be available in this place when it has been planned. 


Christmas Tree Lighting

Christmas season in downtown Manteo gets underway with two annual events. The Lighting of the Town Tree traditionally takes place the 1st Friday night in December on the Manteo Waterfront, featuring a hot chocolate and holiday music sung by children of all ages.


Christmas Parade

The Annual Christmas Parade follows the day after the tree lighting,  complete with bands, floats, and all the trappings of the season on the streets of downtown Manteo.

Farmer's Market

The Manteo Market is a farmers’ type market selling home grown, home baked, and home made products.  The 2017 Market begins Saturday, May 13th in Manteo at George Washington Creef Park, adjacent to the Maritime Museum.

First Friday

First Friday is a fun-filled, family-oriented celebration held the first Friday of each month, April-December, 6-8 p.m. on the Downtown Manteo Waterfront.

Weddings on the Waterfront

For those who are interested in holding a wedding ceremony in front of the picturesque Manteo Waterfront, please see our wedding information page.  Please keep in mind that the waterfront area is a public park and will not be closed at any time to the general public.

Maritime Museum Activities & Events

Annual One-Design Regatta

Held the last Saturday in July this regional regatta is open to Optimist, 420, Sunfish (youth and adult division) for additional information check our Facebook page.

Open Sail

This informal sailing is open to all alumni of our youth programs.  Open Sail is held most Tuesdays during the summer and early fall from 6 - 8PM, weather permitting.  This program is designed to give the sailors additional “on the water” time.  The sailing is supervised but this program is not designed as instructional.  Parents are encouraged to help with boat set up and storage.  We also encourage parents to sail with their child if possible.

Shallowbag Bay Sail About

On Tuesday evening, weather permitting; the public is invited to join us for a short sail on Shallowbag Bay in traditional watercraft.  This is a great way to see Manteo’s waterfront and experience sailing traditional watercraft.  A $5.00 donation per-person is encouraged.  This program will be run by volunteers serving as crew for the boat.

Roanoke Island Maritime Museum Wooden Boat Show

This annual event is held on the last Friday and Saturday in October.  The show is open to all wooden boats new construction or restored.  The boats are displayed in the Creef Boathouse and Park, and in the water at the Roanoke Marshes lighthouse docks.

Exhibiting boats will be judged on owner built/restored or professional built/restored.  Awards will be presented at the awards dinner Saturday evening and will include the “People’s Choice Award” and the “H.A. Creef Award “a perpetual award that is presented to the best overall boat.
